Résumé
This study examines the issues and perspectives of sign language interpreting in Benin, highlighting the challenges
faced by interpreters, the deaf community, and relevant institutions. It explores the sociocultural and institutional
context of interpreting, including the legal recognition of sign language and the shortage of trained professionals.
Methodologically, it combines documentary research, semi-structured interviews with interpreters, and field
observations within deaf associations and public institutions. Findings reveal recurring problems such as limited
training opportunities, inadequate working conditions, and instances of fidelity breaches where the interpreted
message significantly diverges from the source. The study underscores the implications of these challenges for
deaf people’s access to education, justice, and healthcare. It also presents potential solutions, including specialised
interpreter training programs, legal reforms, and greater collaboration between stakeholders. By addressing both
the current constraints and emerging opportunities, this research contributes to improving the quality and
accessibility of sign language interpreting in Benin.
