Résumé

English language is essential in disseminating medical research findings for Malian medical researchers. Most of them translate their articles into English in order to publish them in English-medium journals. Against that backdrop, we have carried out a descriptive qualitative study. The objective of this study was to highlight the perceptions of Malian medical researchers about the role of English in the medical field. We used a semi-structured interview and thematic analysis to collect and analyze data. As a result, all the participants agreed that English is important for their publications in international major journals. Yet, 73% of the respondents have a low level of English language and 27% have an intermediate level. None of them has a high level of English proficiency. Ninety percent (90%) of the participants had recourse to a professional translator, against 10% who used machine translation. We noted that English is a dominant language in the medical field and a particular stress should be put on teaching English for academic purpose in medical schools in Mali. Key words: Disseminating, English for academic purpose, Mali, Medical research.
